These colorful wooden prayer beads/necklace is strung with 216 wooden beads in green, black, tan and brown. This has double the traditional amount of beads so you can do 2 repetitions of the traditional 108. Mala beads are traditionally used, in the Yogic tradition, to recite mantras during meditation. A full cycle of 108 repetitions is counted on the mala to free the person up to pay attention to the sounds, vibrations and meaning of the mantra being chanted. Prayer beads are said to have originated in India thousands of years ago. Most religions today use beaded necklaces to meditate or recite prayers (mala, rosary, subha, etc.). The extra bead found on a traditional mala is not counted in the 108 repetitions but used as a marker to start and end a cycle (this info from: sevencorners.com).
